Local architects James Zack and Lisa de Vito just took home one of 17 AIA Housing Awards for their Laidley Street home, and they got their own WSJ story to boot. The house has a three-story translucent staircase (did Steve Jobs consult?), and a balcony constructed to wreak havoc on the inner ears of vertigo sufferers. Wood was harvested sustainably, solar panels are attached, and the frame was built off-site— enviro-friendly features that, along with "nice use of light" and efficient narrow lot use, tipped the scales in favor of the design. The house was also part of last year's local AIA home tour. [WSJ]
