Beautiful places make for beautiful people, and the beautifuler the place, the beautifuler the people. This is sort of the theory behind the unusually nice affordable-housing buildings in the Tenderloin— two on Mason Street and a social services center on Golden Gate Ave. Architect Michael Willis on 149 Mason, a finished 81-unit building: "If you come into a place with light, color, views and a sense of repose, it says, 'This is what we think of you.'
