With all U.S. Virgin Megastores closing this spring, one writer closes her eyes and remembers the not only the old record store of yore, but Virgin's in particular: "flirting with cute, lanky boys in eyeliner," "culty and esoteric books," and "a magical combination of mall-like consumer convenience and independent-minded cool." Entrepreneur and multigajillionaire Richard Branson first started a Virgin records store in London's Notting Hill Gate, then the equivalent of Haight-Ashbury— it's since become a global powerhouse, but has nonetheless been eclipsed by the Apple/Amazon/Limewire tag team.
