Downtown Booms Not Imaginary

All the talk about how hip downtowns are again wasn't just talk— urban housing had a much increased share of new construction in this decade compared to the last: "a very striking trend." Due to shifting demographics, interest has shifted from suburbia to the denser urban landscape. Doesn't mean urban areas were immune to the housing downturn, of course, and suburb lover Joel Kotkin gets some quotage in this story: "'You have to have an economy to sustain high-density housing,' he says, and most jobs are created in the suburbs." Oh, Joel, you just kill us. [USA Today]
