Lights Will Stay On for Renters

City attorney Dennis Herrera has put into effect a state law that says if a deadbeat landlord stops paying the utility bills, said utilities will not be shut off: "“Given the number of reports of utility shutoffs and the uncertainty in our economy, this declaration is a prudent and necessary step that protects not only tenants, but all San Francisco residents. The state laws triggered by today’s action were enacted to protect public health and safety in circumstances exactly such as these." Now we can put away our whale-blubber lamps. [SF Citizen]
