Senior Center in Chinatown Needs to Demolish a Historic Building

A pretty busy section of Washington Street in Chinatown's got a new building headed for it, in the place of the crusty Nam Yuen building at 740 Wash. The proposed building, the Tom Do Hing Senior Center, is a project of Self Help for the Elderly, and will be one story taller than the address's current occupant. Not to mention a few decades more contemporary architecturally. A potential problem does lurk, however, in the necessary demolition of Nam Yuen: 740 Washington's current building lies within the Chinatown Historic District, and in fact is listed as a contributor to the district. Whether the 18 studio apartments designed by Elevation Architects will ever make it past the planning stage could depend on what the newly minted Historic Preservation Commission has to say.
