Sidewalk Sponges

Jane Martin, landscape architect and designer of the recently spotlighted alleyway behind CityPlace, gets some ink in the Chron today. Martin founded PlantSF, which pushes "permeable" landscaping on neglected concrete sidewalks around the city. There was resistance at first, but she got her start when a sewer backup in 2004 flooded her home with a "river of black water" — the sidewalk garden she fought so hard to plant soaked it all up. Neighbors' interest: piqued. [SFGate]
