Video Flashback: Pre-YouTube Market Street Cable Car Ride

New, 4 comments

The Long Now Foundation, in a series of screenings called "Lost Landscapes of San Francisco," has this sweet black and white footage of a slow-ass streetcar cable car (?) joy ride down Market Street to the Ferry Building (although, come to think of it, the F-Market doesn't seem much faster). The date of the video, according to the archivist, is "considered to be 1905," and it also, if we recall correctly, played earlier this year at a SPUR event. The ride starts at 39:56. Looks like that trial to ban horse-drawn carriages on Market Street stuck.
