Those "horrible lawyer lofts" in SoMa? The earthquake's fault, according to local historian Chris Carlsson. He says in an interview about the 1989 quake: "(It) had the effect of jarring people into realizing, 'You can do something different here.' In some ways, it unleashed the lawyer loft boom in South of Market, which hadn’t started at that point." Cause, meet effect. [SF Examiner]
