The median at Market and 8th's not the only roadside furniture getting a facelift. The planter's in place now, but just down the block at Market and 7th, the Muni stairwell's been closed off. Presumably part of the same Mayor's Office/Department of Public Works program to spruce up the Civic Center, contractors are knocking down the granite walls of the stairwell and replacing them with steel railing. To ease pedestrians into the initial shock of emerging onto U.N. Plaza, no doubt.
