Houses of the Holy: Oakland Cathedral Opens Today

New, 9 comments

The much-anticipated Cathedral of Christ the Light will be consecrated today during a private ceremony in Oakland. Deftly-designed by international architects Skidmore Owings and Merrill (perhaps best known for projects in New York and Dubai) the light filled space is a sustainable one— the church is built of fly ash concrete, with passive cooling systems (to squelch the hellfire and brimstone). In a rather non-traditional move, SOM elected to place the alter in the center of the Church to enforce the idea of community within the congregation. Expect a raised eyebrow or two from the faithful on that one, no doubt.
