Following in the footsteps of fellow would-be real estate mogul the Academy of Art University, the Art Institute of California is in talks to solidify its foothold in Civic Center by renewing its existing lease at 1170 Market Street; AIC also plans to take over the entire building at 10 UN Plaza in hopes of snatching up 100,000 square feet of space for another 10 years. (The mini-campus on the 9th floor of 1145 Market Street will be closed should the deal go through.) A bold move, but the AIC still have a long way to go to catch up to the Academy of Art University, whose greedy little paws have groped many a downtown building— too many, according to some housing advocates. The Art Institute, however, has great hope for its presence in the otherwise not-so-nice Civic Center 'hood.
