Shifting Gears for Sunday Streets

Ready your lexicon for a new word: ciclovia. Because Sunday Streets, the plan to close off 4.5 miles of the Embarcadero to car traffic, is coming — you guessed it — this Sunday. The concept and the word (which means "bike path" in Spanish) come from Bogotá, Colombia, which pioneered the closing of streets for fairs and fun stuff like that. The ciclovias caused a "cultural shift" that brought different social classes together, and Sunday Streets wants some of that action too. Will it work? Stay tuned. [SFBG]
