Greener Than Thou: Reaching Your Solar Potential

New, 2 comments

Greener Than Thou is our report on San Francisco’s obsession with all things green, calling bullshit in the poseurs and lavishing praise on those who have secured their place in environmental paradise. Let it mellow longer than most? Holler!

RoofRay is not a do-it-yourself neighborhood death ray— it's a new website to help you calculate your home's solar potential, a service tailor-made for San Francisco residents thinking about scoring those solar rebates to do their part in greening the city. Don't bother shelling out for an expensive estimate: Log in, trace your roof over Google Maps, input a few other factors (you do know your roof slope, don't you?) and voila: your home's potential kilowatt output. Sadly, we doubt solar calculation is quite that simple; as the program is still in beta, all estimates should probably be viewed as suspect. If all goes according to plan, however, the service could be useful for new home buyers, et cetera, et cetera.
