Wright Property, Wrong House in Sea Cliff

New, 9 comments

The Sea Cliff home at 830 El Camino Del Mar has a price tag of $18,000,000. So what does all that money get you? Built in 1965, the 3,734 sq ft home sits on a half-acre of some of the most choice property in the city. Extra architectural history bonus: According to the listing, Frank Lloyd Wright was commissioned to design a home on the site. Extra-insane feature bonus: the home sports a 20-foot retractable glass roof (seen here above the grand piano). If the listing's claims are accurate, we believe this Wright work to be the VC Morris House (see gallery for original renderings). Sound familiar? The Morris family also commissioned Wright to build his only work in San Francisco — the VC Morris Gift Shop, now known as the Xanadu Gallery. Wright drafted several schemes for the house, but obviously—and unfortunately for San Francisco—neither were built. Perhaps some rich ambitious architecture aficionado might buy this property and realize the Morris family's dream?
