Greener Than Thou: "Off the Grid" ... in the City?

New, 3 comments

Greener Than Thou is our report on San Francisco’s obsession with all things green, giving credit where credit is due and calling bullshit when the need arises. Feeling morally superior on the green front? Testify!

Soon enough, McLaren Park will see San Francisco's first "off the grid" building; Lorax Development recently broke ground on the project, a 1400 square foot "Eco Center," an educational center designed by Toby Long Design for the non-profit Literacy for Environmental Justice. The $1.5 million building will be powered by the sun, have a green roof, and recycle its own wastewater. Is that the scent of bullshit we detect in the air? Just a whiff ... We ask: How do what are now standard green building practices take a building "off the grid?" In the city? When we think of going off the grid, we picture a yurt in rural Vermont, not a slick million-dollar urban initiative, relevant though it may be. Are we wrong?
