Y'know those emails that always seem to sneak through the spam filter? The general scenario is usually as such: A far-flung (and often, questionably literate) scammer spiels some sadsack story before pitching an S.O.S. to the recipient, often begging him or her to funnel/ send money or become otherwise entangled in some hackneyed financial scheme. It appears that a similar-ish trend has popped up on the SF rental scene: Today's Chron delivers a cautionary tale of landlords' nefarious ways. Moral(s) of the story: Don't send money abroad in exchange for keys because the landlord is "traveling" or otherwise internationally indisposed. [SF Gate]
