Signs of progress on the pier beautification front: The ramshackle yet strangely compelling bike hut at Pier 40 looks like it might be getting a bit of an upgrade. A nice little piece of architecture, the bright yellow companion hut takes its basic form from the existing structure but modernizes it and updates the materials, and adds a splash of color. We know that in nearby Mission Bay, local design firm MKThink has built a kayak hut using polycarbonate panels and ipe wood slats — the exact same materials used in Pier 40's new lemon lodge — but there's no word on an accompanying MKThink South Beach bike hut. Local watch dogs, any other reports?
