The racetrack itself was demolished some months ago, but now San Mateo's Bay Meadows is really dead and buried. Angry community group Friends of Bay Meadows filed suit against the site's developer, but ran out of money rather quickly and were forced to settle. Well, more admit defeat than settle per se: they'll receive $50,000 and eight chunks of sentimental art deco roof panel for their troubles. Let this be a lesson to all you other community groups out there considering legal actions against your local redevelopments: make sure at least one of the angered parties is well-funded and angry enough to put their money where their mouth is, or be prepared to settle for roof panels.
