Well, it's official: Don't expect to be running into any additional beat cops any time soon. All those recommendations from independent commissions and the SFPD themselves, not to mention the cries of "troubled neighborhood relations" have have fallen on empty coffers, and the city chose to cut out the pricey beefed up neighborhood police presence -- at least for now. But much of the work, it seems, could be done without additional hires, and just a reshuffling of current staff. Less than 10 percent of San Francisco's police force is hittin' the streets and gettin' 'er done, compared with about 20 to 30 percent of the force in comparable cities.
