In an attempt to rectify past mistakes, the Board of Supervisors voted unanimously yesterday to approve legislation that gives housing priority to those city residents displaced during the 1950s-1970s "redevelopment" of the Western Addition and Hunters Point. Better late than never, right? 40 years ago, 28,000 were qualified to receive a so-called Certificate of Preference after they were displaced from their homes in the name of "progress;" 900 have been contacted so far, according to the Redevelopment Agency. Under the new legislation sponsored by Supervisor Mirkarimi, those with certificates will be placed at the top of a waiting list for one of 1,500 new units added to the area each year.
