Lower Mish "Safety Zone" Increasing Nabe Tension?

New, 1 comment

It was meant to curb crime, but is the anti-gang "safety zone" in the Lower Mission really doing its job? Modeled after popular similar injunctions in L.A., the 60-square-block zone injunction targets gang activity by prohibiting "known" gang members from being seen with other gang members, wearing red, or hanging out in public after 10 p.m. Community leaders say the injunction only further alienates the neighborhood and pushes the crime beyond the zone, into other parts of the Mission. For their part, police say the zone is cutting crime -- but won't release specific statistics to defend their strategy. [SF Gate]
