Saddle Up

Later this week the supes will vote to seal the deal on car-free areas of Golden Gate Park. No word on whether the police will keep track of bicycle-pedestrian collisions. Or bicycle-dog mashups. Or bicycle-wheelchair catastrophes. But with the Critical Mass debacle two weeks ago- and the arrival of spring- there's increased interest in safety. And let's not kid ourselves. People do not ride bikes to save the planet. They do it because its fun, fast and cheap, and easier to park in a city where every day is casual Friday. Saving the planet is nice, too. Did we mention fast? And the old questions come up: should cyclists be required to have insurance? Licenses? Lights?
