St. Helena, Ret.

In what we're going to term Recycled Northern California Vernacular, a gigglingly happy house by architect/polymath/vintner Josh Chandler in today's Chronicle. Completely offhand, wrapping an 1890's house in new and recycled materials, it comes off as inspired and effortless, unlike so much of the pristine design in Napa and Sonoma. Built in a walkable neighborhood of St. Helena for a retired couple who don't seem exactly... retiring. Planning ahead: if you're enough of a voyeur, this house's kitchen is included in a tour to benefit Music in the Vineyards on April 28th.
