It's winter time, and with the prospect of snow, Bay Area residents are trekking to Tahoe to strap on the skis or snowboards. The Ski Area Citizens Coalition would rather have you spend your funds at slopes that prioritize green practices than those who engage in evil development deeds. Enter the coalition's scorecard, the California version of which grades state ski areas on a scholarly 'A' through 'F' scale. Head of the class? Alpine Meadows, thanks to things like using biodiesel in its snow cats and lobbying for the right kind of legislation. Needs to attend summer school? Kirkwood Mountain Resort gets an 'F' for daring to use diesel and plan future developments. No word from the SACC on the environmental impact from sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic for hours on end in from Sacramento on through Lake Tahoe.
