Rental Watch: Charming Victorian Snow Job, NOPA

Over the next several days, we'll be taking a close look at San Francisco's rental listings, separating the wheat from the chaff according to price range. Starting on a shoestring with a budget of $1000-$1500, we found a slew of look-alike studios or 1-bedrooms, some with hardwood floors (bonus) and bay windows (deuce) but few else in the way of detail. While weren't surprised to find the same at 1015 Pierce Street—vinyl flooring, IKEA cabinetry, basic bathroom—we are impressed/amused by this $1275/month Jr. 1-bedroom apartment situated in NOPA/ Alamo Square. Why? Packaging is everything, and the proprietors of this property were definitely peeking over big boys' shoulders while conjuring up a marketing plan for their bitty flat: 1015 Pierce has a website (never mind its design), along with a dedicated phone line, where a radio announcer's voice assured us today that yes, the single available unit is open for viewing each Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m. only—no exceptions—until rented. Regardless of the spin though, 1015 Pierce does cost about $200 less than the average shoebox. Stampede, commence!
