Rental Watch: Getting What You Pay For

[1350 Hayes Street, NOPA. Worth $3.5K/ month?]

Hell, while we're on this rental kick why not see what we can grub up for $3,000-$3,500? While one can begin to move up in the world at this price, we're still seeing a preponderance of thoroughly uninspired, monochrome and vinyl-bedecked units, such as this Jr. 1 bedroom renting for $3200 in at Pacific and Fillmore Streets, in Pacific Heights. Did we mention that parking is available for an extra fee? Views are powerful marketing tools in this town, but seriously now . . . And on that note, here's another "Benjamin Moore in eggshell white" offender, found in the Sunset.

[furnished kitchen at The Lansing]

[Spectacular views from the rooftop deck]

Moving right along to the condo front, this 1 bedroom, $3300/ month loft-o-matic at The Lansing is fine enough, we suppose— bearably furnished (sort of), underground parking, rooftop deck (with views of the other high rises, natch), a 42" flat screen TV. No Wii to be found (-10).

This spot absolutely pales in comparison to 1350 Hayes Street, a $3,500/ month brick and timber conversion loft in NOPA. 2 floors; earthquake retrofitted reclaimed wood, restored brick, and exposed beams. Fully landscaped yard with private terrace. Parking for 2. Repeat: parking for 2. Dogs are even considered! Even though we employed some very shifty research methods in order to arrive at our conclusion, it is as such: Getting what one pays for is much easier said than done.
