Town vs Gown: photographic evidence of Berkeley oaks bearing little old ladies, in this case the formidable Shirley Dean, Betty Olds and Sylvia McLaughlin. In comfy natural-fiber outfits accessorized with the inevitable bullhorn, to protest the expansion of UC Berkeley's athletic facilities into the old oak grove. So far no indications of damage to the oak's fragile, shallow root system by hordes of tree embracers in Birkenstocks.
