Over the bridge and through the gourmet ghetto to a very stylish grandmother indeed. This 1908 Newsom & Newsom pulls together various Arts & Crafts interior details, probably all redwood, now painted white, and sweet exterior details, like the sweeping eaves on those dormers, putting it a cut above the standard Berkeley Shingle. The Newsoms were criticized by proto-modernist Willis Polk for their magpie detailing, but a hundred years later their eccentric take on Arts & Crafts is completely charming. 20 Hillcrest Road is on a street-to-street lot and includes a creek, so mind the spawning salmon. Open this Sunday, September 10 from 2-4. (more pics online, click on "Berkeley") $1,650,000.
Like Arts & Crafts houses? The Grubb Company sells a lot of them, and their open houses are a great way to see them without resorting to breaking-and-entering. And we hear there's a new ice cream place Ici on College Avenue (near Ashby.)
