Chicano, This Weekend

[Frank Romero, The Arrest of the Paleteros, 1996 (detail) The de Young]

No bikes in Golden Gate Park this weekend? Oops that's like no dogs. We mean no cars in Golden Gate Park this weekend. Take the long stroll and visit the de Young for The Quilts of Gee's Bend, an astonishing exhibition of quilts by four generations of African-American women in Alabama. The other surprise at the de Young- the permanent collection is better than we ever expect.

Expect crowds, however, because the big draw at the de Young this weekend will not be needlework or Diebenkorns but Chicano, a landmark trio of exhibitions about the art of Mexico, including the personal collection Cheech Marin has put together over the decades. Not surprising. He was the only thing worth watching on Nash Bridges. Lots of music, free admission. Celebrate! This used to be Mexico, remember?
