Wednesday Price-Chopper: Get Out Your Guillotines

We may as well hop right on the 3800 Washington Street tumbrill. As previously blogged in SFLuxe and Socketsite, this (1904) San Francisco version of the (1768) Petit Trianon at Versailles has been price chopped by $3.3 million. Still, for $19.5 million, that's a lot of cake to eat.

Wrong scale, different plan, wrong color, there's a family resemblance but that's about it. So maybe the original was merely a suggestion to the architect, who managed to turn out a cold, stiff, mortuary version of one of the glories of French 18th century architecture. But let's not blame the architect too much. This is a 1904 McMansion, wrapping early-20th century expectations with an 18th century skin, a souvenir of someone's Grand Tour. We're hitting the $10 Sofia Coppola version tonight at 9:40.
