In 1992,East Palo Alto had the highest murder rate per capita in the country. Now it has a luxury hotel: the Four Seasons opens at the northern end of Silicon Valley, minutes from Stanford and a short ride to SFO.

Reports the Chronicle, "Jennifer Stine, who was born and raised in East Palo Alto, is among the first 60 residents to be employed. Stine, 27, said she didn't know what the Four Seasons was until she applied for the job, but said it's one of many good things that are finally happening in her hometown. There is, however, one thing that's missing, she said.

"'Hopefully, one day we'll get a supermarket. That's what we really need,' she said."
