Are we entering a golden age of tenancy? Could yesterday's defeat of Prop 98, along with rising rents and the impact of the current housing crisis result in< a long-term change in attitudes towards renters and renting in California? Will activists who fought for to defeat prop 98 continue to join together across the state to fight the good fight for California renters everywhere? Or will we just rest on our laurels and forget about everything until it hits the ballot again in a few years. Minds inquire. [Beyond Chron]

Prop 98, the measure that, in short, kills rent control— yes, we know it's not that simple, OK?— just might be on its way out. According to a recent poll conducted by the Public Policy Institute, 30 percent of voters say they'd vote for the measure, 22 percent were unsure, and 48 percent would vote against it. [Indybay]

For some, the American dream is home ownership. For me, it's rent control. I mention this because the note was slipped under the door today— with a banked increase from 2006, my rent is officially being raised 3.7 percent starting June 1st. Which, thankfully, ain't so bad. I pay about the upper limit of suggested rent relative to my net income, 40 percent. And it's still significantly less than any of the studios currently listed on Craigslist, none of which I could afford. Hence, I'll be voting no on Proposition 98— if it passes, many in my building and the neighborhood will probably have to start looking for new places to live.
