So were we a little naive to think that that proposed name upgrade to Golden Gate National Recreation Area might actually go without controversy? In fact, not even a week passed before dog walkers began baying at the moon in protest. At issue: the rechristening as a "national park" would utterly ruin the right of dogs to run free in the park, or at least make it easier for the government to do said ruining. If San Francisco's very own Nancy Pelosi gets her way, the Golden Gate National Recreation area will undergo a rebranding — as the Golden Gate National Park. Drastic! Actually, say proponents, the change will make it the country's 59th national park, and gain it the prestige and money that it has long deserved. The bill goes to the House next week. [SF Gate]
We're just sayin' ... Our very own PeLo is urging Bush to adopt the mortgage relief plan that he has vowed to veto today; Pelosi echoes Federal Reserve Board chair Benjamin Bernanke, who has recently advocated for refinancing by the government. Quoth PeLo: "Only moments after falsely accusing Congress of inaction, the president signed bipartisan legislation ... and will sign other bipartisan priorities that will become law because the he set aside partisanship and worked with Democrats to make progress for America. We urge him to do so again and work with Congress to keep people in their homes and stabilize the housing market." [PR Newswire]
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi graced San Francisco with her presence over the weekend in a bid for voters' support on a series of bailout measures that she believes Congress should move on by May 5th. Says the teleprompter Pelosi: "We want to simplify it for homeowners so they can keep their homes. We want to make it possible for renters to be able to live in affordable housing." One in every twenty California homeowners is expected to go into foreclosure within the next two years, according to Speaker P. [abc7]
