We're big fans of the Presidio and Crissy Field here at Curbed SF, and this is the first in series of posts covering what's going on in that corner of town. For some people, this former Army base is their backyard, while for others, a mysterious and unknown part of town, or a fundamental part of the Spanish presence in California. The Presidio Trust is working towards making the place more accessible, keeping it profitable, while respecting and uncovering the site's historic fabric and unique ecology– in what may well be one of the country's most complex examples of adaptive re-use. First up, we have a look at San Francisco's newest lodgings, the Inn at The Presidio.
The Inn at The Presidio opened only a few weeks ago, and the renovated officers' quarters is a hit. Operating as a luxury B&B, food and beverage service is limited to a breakfast buffet and afternoon wine and cheese, so for now, no boozy nights in the bar, or room service. The lo-fi format fits the Presidio Trust's desire to have more hospitality business, and a full-service hotel on the Parade Ground is still a long way off. Meanwhile, sales are brisk— seriously, this is the perfect place for your in-laws. There's already been one weekend wedding buyout, and the Inn is another piece in making the Presidio a wedding venue, adding overnight accommodations to the existing chapels, party venues and scenic photo opportunities.
There are seventeen airy, high-ceilinged suites (plus five smaller, non-suite rooms) arranged around three staircases, so no more than three rooms to a landing with the kind kind of thick-walled, solid construction the Army excelled in, and all of the suites open directly to the long porches looking out over the Presidio. Unlike a lot of B&Bs, the decor is best described as luxury hotel-meets-military, managing to be grand and intimate at the same time, and there's no sense of the hypothetical (or actual) exhausted couple trying to operate lodgings in a big old house. No Fawlty Towers here. Part of the Waterford Hotels family (Cavallo Point) and managed by Joie de Vivre veteran Terry Haney, it's got both a great vibe and the ability to soothe the fussiest traveler.
