Old-timers of the Mission are talking up the old days, when Missionites pronounced Valencia "Valencha," and San Jose "Sannazay." Commenter guero attributes the "Mission accent," which is gone nowadays, to the "busloads of Italians" who lived and worked along Valencia. At one point, guero's Mission speak was mistaken for a Boston accent, and it's also been called "brooklyn-ish." Somebody want to call up some anthro students to document our neighborhood accents?
