Workers of the World Unite: Curbed SF's Guide to May Day Madness
Thursday, May 1, 2008, by Sarah Hromack
Is the guy standing near our table at the coffee shop dressed in Dickie's coveralls and a fedora because A) we're in San Francisco; B) his profession necessitates the aforementioned pants; or C) today is May Day? Let's give him the benefit of the doubt and vote C. Within the following hour, West Coast longshore workers will strike collectively, effectively shutting down San Francisco's docks; interested parties will assemble at 10:30 a.m. at the Longshore (ILWU) hall and Mason and Beach Streets for a little chat with the likes of Danny Glover and Cindy Sheehan, before marching down the Embarcadero for a noontime rally at Justin Herman Plaza. Want to march? Fine. (Reports to the Curbed SF inbox, as always.) Don't want to march? Fine. Perhaps you'd like to know which streets might be cordoned off, or where traffic will turn gnarly. Maybe poochie doesn't want to trot around a few extra hundred people during his afternoon jaunt in the park. Deets on today's goings-down, after the jump. And in the meantime, how about another cup of coffee before flaming us in the comment box, eh? (Or at least give us time for one more. Thanksmuch.)
