Greener Than Thou: San Franciso vs. LA in Green Face Off
Tuesday, April 22, 2008, by Jimmy Stamp

Greener Than Thou is our report on San Francisco’s obsession with all things green, giving credit where credit is due and calling bullshit when the need arises. Feeling morally superior on the green front? Testify!

2008_01_greenbridge.jpgIt had to happen sooner or later: LA versus San Francisco in a West Coast green battle royale. Which city will take home the title of "Greenest large city in the United States of America"? Mayors in both cities have plans to drastically reduce greenhouse gases — LA to 35% below 1990 levels by 2030, and SF to 20% below 1990 levels by 2012. Both policies place value on strict LEED-backed building standards on new construction, and will soon be reviewed soon by their respective local governments, but who's is greener? Which policy is more stringent? Sure, technically LA's laws will remove more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, but they're five times bigger than San Francisco. So that means that for better or worse, San Francisco is the victor with a policy that will "far surpass those of any other large city". So what does LA have to say about that? Deptuy Mayor Nancy Sutley throws a thinly veiled insult backhanded complement in noting the difference between sizes in the cities: "We think of San Francisco as a boutique city." Oh, it is so on.
