SF Parking Goes 2.0

smartcar.jpegSan Francisco's proposed pilot parking program, SFPark, will radically change the way a quarter of the city's public parking spots are controlled, hopefully forcing drivers to reconsider their positions on public transportation as parking becomes much more complicated— and spendy. According to the plan, parking rates will be adjusted based on time of day, day of week, and duration of stay. Sensors embedded into the asphalt will track the whole system; coins, credit cards, and prepaid debit cards will be accepted as payment. Taking 2.0 to the streets, the program will also allow drivers to check parking ability via the Interweb (see: Zip Car), receive texts when meters are about to expire, and even purchase more time via cell.
