Denied Access: Pac Heights Ousts Ralph Lauren

Fact: Ralph Lauren will not be joining Marc Jacobs and Jonathan Adler for lunch on Fillmore Street any time soon, if ever. The Pacific Heights Nabe Association and Fillmore Merchants Association voted 6-1 to boot the Ralph Lauren boutique slated to open at 2040 Fillmore Street. The retailer has, unfortunately, already signed a lease on the 3,500 square foot space, the former site of Smith & Hawkins. The real news here, perhaps, is the Fillmore Merchants Association's hard line on the subject: though the Planning Department suggested at least a temporary use permit for the site, the nabes has elected to ban not only RL, but also to raise arms against all future chain retail. Sigh.
